What year are you and what do you study?

Senior, Mechanical Engineering

Who is/was your employer?

Robert Bosch GmbH
Stuttgart, Germany

How did you learn about your internship?

A couple Bosch internet searches and an email while working at my co-op job with Bosch in Charleston, South Carolina helped me land the internship in Stuttgart.

What was the application process like?

A phone interview with my boss was the only actual interview. Other than that it was all HR. My department was very excited about the prospect of a native English speaker coming to work with them in Stuttgart.

What were your major tasks or projects at this internship?

  •          Algorithm development in Matlab, Python and Scala for two doctoral papers on high dimensional feature selection
  •          Data cleaning, preprocessing, and analysis through Matlab, R, KNIME, Rapidminer
  •          Visualization of data and facilitation of efficient data comprehension for upper management using Tableau
  •          Creation of idealized data lake infrastructure for Robert Bosch Diesel Systems
  •          Enabled communication between Manufacturing Execution System experts all around the globe by custom making internal social media communities with XHTML/CSS and JavaScript

Do you have any recommendations for Georgia Tech students looking to intern in the same company or country?

Don’t be afraid to work your way into the job. I started in Charleston, not in Stuttgart. Go work for Bosch in Charleston (or some other German company in some other city) and try to talk your way over. Worst case scenario: you get work experience!

Where did you live? Did you find accommodations independently or with your company's help?

https://www.studierendenwerk-stuttgart.de/. This non-for-profit houses students for super cheap. You need to apply for a spot about 6 months in advance, but it’s worth it. Decent living at a great location for dirt cheap.

How has this internship influenced your career path?

I was given the opportunity to explore many cutting edge technologies whilst with Bosch. I am hoping to continue in data science when I’m out of college. That would never have been my choice without Bosch. This internship has been a leading factor in defining my career path.

If paid, did the company you worked for pay you enough to live off of your salary or stipend, or did you have to supplement your income with personal funds?

Bosch paid 1000 euros a month. With my room only costing 235 euro a month, this was plenty to live, eat, drink and travel. Side note about the travel, look into FlixBus. Waaaaaaaaay cheaper than trains
